It's a particular bugbear of my readers (and myself) that Ireland languishes behind in hardware release dates and service rollouts. The odd situation of having to pay for delivery of the Amazon Kindle from the US is frustrating to say the least. You're better off buying an iPad and downloading the Kindle app.

Unfortunately the size of the Irish market consistently pushes back release dates to satisfy demand in the US, UK etc.

In terms of online rentals poor broadband penetration has doubtless not helped. I agree, though, there needs to be a Netflix-type service and the likes of Xtravision or Chartbusters would do well to get cracking on it.

The Apple TV won't be replacing my jaunt to the local video library (if only because it's exercise), but as a back-up...well I'm not against it.

I might have missed an episode - but why is Ireland so far behind other countries when it comes to streamed content such as Spotify, Hulu et al - I'm aware of licence restrictions - but is anyone in the goverment or industry actually working on this? Also, I wonder if XtraVision is just waiting to fold in light of these streaming services - if not already, I think they should be looking to partner with [TV/Movie] content providers to offer an on-line services (similar to Netflix in the US.

All that said - I've looked at the Apple TV and will probably take a punt on this - whether or not it replaces my walk to the local video store is another matter.

Hi guys,

I used to use Tweetdeck on the iPhone (still do on the computer) but I switched to the official Twitter app when it came out and I find it much better. The tweet history goes very far back whereas Tweetdeck only shows the previous hundred or so tweets (you might think that's a lot but if you follow a lot of people or are searching for a tweet from over a day ago it comes into it's own!) Also, the Twitter app shows thumbnails of pictures which is a nice touch.

On Niall's recommendation I updated to EirText Pro, but I was disappointed to find that in fact it only shows replies other EirText Pro users. However, there are other features which make the upgrade worthwhile such as multiple accounts and text signatures (much like email signatures).

Another of my favourite apps (and Dusty will like this one) is FStream. It lets you stream radio stations which don't have their own apps. All you have to do is enter the stream URL and station name and press play. You can also copy and paste the URLs on a computer and add them via a web browser as long as both the computer and the iPhone/Pod/Pad are on the same wifi network.

What's interesting about the Amsterdam office isn't so much the technology, which exists in the wild already, but the mindset behind how it is used.
At an organisational level employees have the choice of interacting in different ways to achieve different goals.
If you need a space to collaborate and exchange ideas you don't need a boardroom. If you have a client coming over you can meet them on a sofa instead of across a table.
This combination of a flexible management style aided by industrial design is what is driving the Dutch model, and sets is apart from the current 'road warrior' model.

Interesting piece on the deskless office but you don't have to go to Amsterdam to experience it. At Workspace Anywhere, Microsoft Office, Exchange e-mail, Windows, Citrix & and data storage are available from any computer, iPhone or thin client you nominate just by clicking on a browser. As reported on the podcast good for working on the move, from home, a trade show, hotel or anywhere you are in the world where you can access the internet. www.workspaceanywhere.com
